Menstruation
Definition:
Menstruation Is a periodic occurrence during the reproductive years of a lady(from menarche to menopause),In which there is moulting if inner lining if the womb followed by bleeding.
In simple terms, Menstruation is a phenomenon whereby there is periodical discharge or flow of blood from the vagina during their reproductive years.
It varies considerably in volume, flow rate, regularity and duration in various ladies. On a normal occurrence, the average length of menstrual cycles in ladies is about 28 days. Moreover, lengths of between 24 to 35 days are still regarded normal.
A high percentage of ladies have their Menstruation for 4 to 5 days, though some have theirs for only 3 days which is also regarded as normal.
Ladies lose an average of about 50ml of blood in each Menstruation. The menstrual blood is made up of partially altered blood , mucus and cellular debris.
The first menstrual period i.e The menarche usually occurs between 11 and 16 years but if you are 18 years and you haven't noticed your menarche as a lady ,you need to see a doctor.
Cessation of Menstruation occurs at 50(+or-)5 years i.e 45 to 55 years.
Mechanism:
During or immediately after Menstruation, the brain starts to produce FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) which acts on the ovary to initiate the growth of the ovarian follicle and produce oestrogen. The oestrogen acts on the endometrium to promote proliferation of glands which are already tall, straight and arranged in columns .Later, these glands become widened, elongated and turtous.
The secretion of FSH in the brain stimulates further growth of the ovarian follicle (which contains the eggs)and production of oestrogen.FSH reaches a peak ,then there is a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) from the brain also. This surge of LH causes the rupture of the ovarian follicle and release of the egg(ovulation).
Following ovulation, the remaining shell of ovarian follicle called the corpus luteum secretes oestrogen and progesterone which prepare the endometrium of the womb for possible implantation of fertilized egg.
What happens if the egg gets fertilized? See now.
However,if the egg is not fertilized , the corpus luteum degenerates after a week and the production of oestrogen and progesterone falls. This causes the thickness of the endometrium to shrink. Later ,under the influence of homorne prostaglandins, the small arteries supplying blood to the endometrium contracts and relax. The period of relaxation causes bleeding and this is accompanied by shedding the upper layer of cells of the endometrium. This occurrence is what is known as "Menstruation".
