FIBROID:
This is the most common benign tumor in females. It is common in Nigeria and in general very known among black women. The cause for fibroid is not known yet but some factors such as genetic, race , nulliparity, and infertility are associated with it . It occurs mostly in the body of uterus but may also occur in the cervix or even the broad ligament. The fibroid maybe symptomless in the body but the clinical features are,:
1. abdominal mass
2. menorrhagia
3. irregular bleeding
4. dysmenorrhea
5. pressure symptoms
6. infertility

Complications:
a. Can undergo torsion especially the pedunculate type.
b. bleeding
c. infections
d. cancerous
e. degeneration

If a pregnant woman has a well deceloped fibroid, surgery is never done until after delivery to avoid severe bleeding . For fibroid that is symptom free , it may be good to leave it alone. But if it more than a 12weeks pregnancy size, it should be removed more so if the woman complains of infertility. Treatment is by myectomy . If the woman is post menopausal, abdominal hysterectomy is preferred.
recurrence rate following myectomy is about 12%, hysterectomy is better .
